What is Apple MFi?

MFi stands for “Made for iPhone/iPad/iPod” and is a quality approval from Apple themselves. Manufacturers run their iPhone, iPad and iPod accessories (Lightning cables, gamepads, Bluetooth controllers, and so on) through compliance and safety tests. If the products pass the rigorous testing, they are then able to state “Made for iPhone” logo on their product packaging.

What does this mean for you?

MFi will give you the peace of mind and reassurance that the charge cable will not damage your loved Apple device. Every MFi certified device contains a small authentication chip, that when connected to an accessory (such as a charger cable), verifies it’s suitable to use. When these chips can’t talk to each other (when the accessory is non MFi) you can receive a notification that states devices “may not work reliably” with your device.

Why are uncertified Apple accessories so bad?

By looking at Apple’s counterfeit guide you realise the scale of the problem. Apple accessories, like Lightning cables, are set to ultra-specific standards. They’re made at consistent sizes with consistent Made, with smooth, perfectly spaced contacts. Unlike USB cables, all Apple Lightning charge cables need to be identical.

When Lightning cables don’t fit these criteria, they may conduct electricity incorrectly, generate heat or may not fit inside the charging port correctly. If you're lucky these cables will break, before it breaks your expensive Apple device.

How to identify a non MFi Cable?

The Lightning cable on the left is MFi-Certified. The cable on the right isn’t. You can see that on the left the connectors are evenly spaced, perfectly sized and set correctly. The cable on the right is made of cheaper materials, and the spacing is inconsistent and not set correctly.

Is it worth the risk?

In our opinion NO! It’s not worth risking the life and warranty of your £500+ Apple device by using an inferior charge cable. In today's world, your iPhone is more than just a phone. It’s a camera, a sat nav, a diary, a computer. We use them in all aspects of our day so preserving its lifespan is essential.

If you are ever unsure if a lightning cable is MFi certified, just head over to the Apple site: https://mfi.apple.com/MFiWeb/getAPS and see for yourself. You can search by product code and brand.
